A platform for the Circular Economy

SEMiLLA PLATFORM

VISION: With the increasing world population the stress on Earth’s resources is spinning out of control. Sustainable growth and a fair availability of resources requires restoration instead of exhaustion. Regenerative circular economic technologies and systems present effective tools to meet this requirement helping to close economic loops, minimizing the need of resources while mining the value of waste.
MISSION: Accelerate the transition to a circular society by deploying the principles of highly efficient and robust restorative closed life support technologies designed for long term space missions to make Earth sustainable for all.

The world is witnessing a paradigm shift. The transition from a linear to a circular economy may be about to drive the biggest transformation in business since the Industrial Revolution 250 years ago through a radical departure from the traditional 'take, make, waste' production and consumption models. We are going through the transformation to a circular economy, a socio-economic system which is smart, cross-sectorial and full of opportunities.

SEMiLLA IPStar is developing the SEMiLLA Circular Economy platform. An international network of thematic hubs fueled by advanced life support space technology to realize the vision of a truly circular economy. And the truly ‘astronomical’ opportunities it presents.

The first SEMiLLA Circular Economy Hub is being developed in Malaga, Spain in close collaboration with the University of Malaga, the city of Malaga and the Technology Park of Andalucia.

What is SEMiLLA

SEMiLLA is a circular hotspot where new business initiatives in urban planning, production technologies, space and terrestrial technology, hospitality, art and design come together fostering cross-disciplinary service- and product development. It is a hotspot for energy, waste, water, air and food management of the future in a circular economy and smart cities. A place where entrepreneurs, educators, artists and scientists, undertake new sustainable initiatives, and put circular developments into practice nourishing organizational diversity.

The food, water and energy cycle constitutes the unifying factor. Continuous innovation leads to viable business opportunities that are embraced by entrepreneurs, governments, investors and customers. The term sustainability has a dual meaning here: economic and environmental sustainability in the context of a transition to a circular economy.
